Greens

We have enjoyed an extended playing season thanks to two main factors: firstly, all the hard work put in this year with multiple hollowcoring, topdressing, and verti-draining sessions; and secondly, rainfall levels have been lower than in previous years.

Temporary greens will be used where necessary over the next few months, as re-compacting the greens through constant play would essentially undo the work completed over the season. Ongoing and regular reviews take place, and greens will be put back into play if and when appropriate.

Tees

We are now playing off mats where necessary to allow renovation work to be carried out and to provide sufficient rest time for these works to take effect. Over the last two weeks, all tees have been verti-drained, and all par 3s divoted with a soil and seed mix.

In addition, a winter turf hardener fertiliser (Legion) has been applied, which contains both phosphorus and potassium to assist with rooting, water-use efficiency, and stress tolerance during the autumn and early spring seasons. The high proportion of iron also helps to provide rapid greening. The height of cut on the mowers has been raised to allow the grass to thicken over winter.

Fairways, Collars & Rough

As grass growth has slowed, cutting is now carried out less regularly and primarily for visual effect. If conditions become unworkable due to wet weather, we will hold off on cutting to avoid causing more harm than good with machinery.

Tree Work

Last week, we spent two days on the 2nd tee removing a number of branches. This has opened up the left side of the tee, making it fairer for those who play a left-to-right ball flight.

Driving Range

The driving range outfield is holding up reasonably well. Yes, it is patchy and worn in places, but the team have made a conscious effort to avoid the worst areas when using the mechanical ball picker.

The team are regularly out early in the morning and in the dark conducting hand picks to avoid any unnecessary damage. You may have noticed that the net down the left-hand side has seen better days; this is planned to be replaced over the coming days.

Final Thoughts

It has been a challenging year, but we’ve received a great deal of positive feedback from members and guests. Our small team has worked tirelessly to produce a golf course to be proud of. We are by no means the finished article, but we are moving in the right direction.

Happy Christmas from all the team!!!
